If you are among the one out of every two persons aged 18 and older who struggle with achy muscles, stiff joints or other forms of musculoskeletal pain, you know as well as we do that pain can be complicated and different from one day to the next. Even the definition of pain continues to change as researchers learn more about this complex topic.

Pain is currently defined as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage” (IASP, 2020).

By studying pain, researchers now know that it is a very personal experience and the more our patients understand how pain works and the more resources they have to confront it, the better they can feel.

At 360 Physical Therapy, we take your pain seriously and understand its many complexities. To provide our patients with the most comprehensive pain treatment approaches possible, we have partnered with Vori Health – an award-winning virtual medical practice that specializes in holistic muscle and joint care— to offer our patients personalized, mindfulness-based pain care both in and out of the clinic. With the support of a dedicated health coach and convenient video visits, you can boost the progress you’re making in physical therapy from the comfort of your home.

Read on to learn how the program works and helps put you back in charge of your pain.

Why a personalized approach to pain matters

As its definition implies, pain is not always directly related to an injury or change in your body. For example, a big change in your body, such as arthritis, might not cause you much pain, while a seemingly minor injury, like a paper cut, could be terribly painful to you.

Pain is there to protect you from a threat (as in: "Hey, you, lift your foot off of that sharp nail!"). But your brain can sometimes get fooled and misinterpret the severity of an injury and produce pain when only a perception of a threat is present; if you are stressed about your foot, for example, your brain could produce an exaggerated sense of pain as a result.

Because of these factors, pain is deeply personal and can be influenced by a physical injury as well as your reactions to the world around you. What you see, hear, think, and believe can all contribute to the severity of your pain experience. Pain may cause you to stress, but stress from other sources in your life may be making your pain worse.

Research shows that you can help manage your pain by recognizing its triggers and changing harmful patterns in your environment. Finding and relieving sources of stress in your life, like a chronic job or relationship struggles, for example, can help improve your pain.

Understanding these factors and applying these learnings and methodologies alongside those learned throughout the therapeutic intervention of your physical therapy care, can all help you take control of your pain.
